Girls SexAlthough most women have high expectations ruling nearly every area of her life but when it comes to sex, they tend to keep their dissatisfaction or frustration a secret. “Most women keep their dissatisfaction with sex a secret, leaving their partners (let alone their doctors) in the dark, whereas men, if they have trouble with sex, it’s a crisis. They run to the doctor and say ‘I need something for this.’ Women don’t do that. They just sort of stuff it down and push it further down on the list,” says Anita Clayton, a psychiatrist who focuses on women’s sexuality at the University of Virginia Health System. According to various surveys done on women and sex, certain home truths emerge. Here are some of them: Most women shove sex as their least priority. Women hardly get their emotional needs fulfilled by sex. An orgasm may not be top priority for most women. Many women strive for the ‘body beautiful’ as promoted by media and feel dissatisfied with many aspects of their physical bodies. Women are normally not very expressive about their desires and wants in bed, in the fear of hurting their partners or the fear of rejection by their partners. In fact, most women, however educated and liberated they may feel are not even aware of their sexual desires due to various cultural, social and religious taboos which label such women desires as promiscuous or shameful. External pressures usually negatively impact a woman’s view about her body which in turn makes sex less attractive. Despite the commendable advances which women have made in the fields of education, occupation, arts, science and politics, these have not made any dent in their achieving greater freedom in the fields of sexual comfort or satisfaction. The alleged sexual revolution which women are supposed to have undergone unfortunately has still not changed many sexual attitudes and behaviors in women round the world. Women who are not sexually active are still considered prudish rather than prudent and they continue to feel like failures. The highly regarded National Health and Social Life Survey (Laumann, Gagnon, Michael, & Michaels, 1994), a nationwide survey of adult sexual behavior, revealed many incongruities between perceptions and realities about women and sex. For instance, we may believe that women are usually eager to have their first sexual intercourse, but 30% of all women interviewed reported that they did not want, or rather were forced to have, their first intercourse. Fewer than 20% of the women reported masturbating more than three times a month, and 58% of the women had not masturbated at all during the preceding twelve months. Even in the most advanced societies, girls are made aware of their helplessness by parental warnings to avoid unknown men, to move in groups, to be cautious on dates, never to leave a drink unattended, and to be vigilant against the dangers of pregnancy, STDs, date rape, sexual abuse, and violence. Developmental psychologists in the US mention that while boys are taught to explore, compete, and dominate, girls are still encouraged to accept, cooperate, and accommodate. This type of upbringing will undoubtedly impact women and sex and their attitudes towards it.
