sexual problems

There is a wide range of sexual problems affecting both men and women which continue to affect the daily lives of millions round the world. While the most common male sexual problems could be erectile dysfunction (impotence), loss of sexual desire, premature (or rapid) ejaculation and retarded (or delayed) ejaculation, the sexual problems usually affecting women are essentially three types according to Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA). These are lack of sexual desire, difficulties becoming sexually aroused or achieving orgasm and pain during intercourse. The underlying causes of all these sexual problems could be many, including emotional trauma, lack of mental or physical compatibility between the couple, relationship problems, insufficient stimulation or time spent on foreplay due to lack of woman’s or her partner’s awareness, gynecological problems including endometriosis, etc, dryness of the vagina, and more. Then there are other physical and medical situations where men and women can be affected with sexual problems. These situations include tiredness, chronic diseases like diabetes, liver disease, cancer, neurological disorders or even alcohol or substance abuse. All of these and more can give rise to serious sexual problems.

Interestingly, there was an extremely path-breaking article published in JAMA in 1999 which mentioned that sex problems, though common in both men and women, it is especially prevalent in women. According to its survey, of men and women aged between 18 and 59, 43% of women and 31% of men reported some sexual problem.

Other than pathological disorders, there are many factors which contribute to sexual problems, one of the primaries of which is problems relevant to relationships. Issues like child rearing, money, abuse etc can completely put an end to communication, which is a requisite to sexual harmony. Then there is depression, anxiety, stress, resentment and guilt of either side can cause sexual problems. Ignorance about sexual matters may prevent the couple from getting any pleasure from a sexual intercourse – instead it becomes a routine activity which only meets the biological needs of two human beings.

Among the sexual problems which most men are challenged with some time or the other, is erectile dysfunction or ED. While men need an erect penis to maintain any chosen sexual activity, whether it is masturbation, oral, anal or vaginal intercourse, it is estimated that persistent ED affects about 10% of all men at any time. Of course the chances of ED increase with age: 18% of 50–59 year olds have trouble with their erections compared with 7% of 18–29 year olds. The causes of ED are both physical (tiredness) or mental (depression, anxiety and stress). Diabetes is another common cause of men being affected by ED: up to 25% of all diabetic men aged 30–34 are affected by ED, as are 75% of diabetic men aged 60–64. Smoking contributes up to 80% of all ED cases and regular heavy consumption of alcohol is also considered to be detrimental to sexual health and the reason for many sexual problems for men as well as women. Sexual problems for men and women can also start side-effects of prescribed drugs, particularly those used to treat high blood pressure, heart disease, depression, peptic ulcers and cancer.
