FetishThough the concept of fetish has been present for some centuries now, according to modern theory, it is a kind of sexual orientation which is regarded as a normal variation of human sexuality. This definition of fetish is upheld by both psychologist as well as medical doctors. In simpler terms, fetish can be used to describe a person’s fascination to use inanimate objects as a stimulus for sexual arousal and ultimate sexual satisfaction. One could trace back the origin of fetish in the 18th century when according to Charles de Bross, fetishism was considered as a primary stage in the evolution of religion. Gradually with the evolution of psychosexual and psychodynamic theories of society and individuals in the 19th century, psychologists Alfred Binet, German philosopher Max Dessoir and Sigmund Freud contributed further towards its meanings and significance in day to day lives of individuals. In fact, it was Alfred Binet who introduced the term fetish in 1887, in the context of analyzing the psychological profile of an individual and called it sexual admiration of an inanimate object. Then in 1912, Richard von Krafft-Ebing extended its meaning and referred to fetishism as the admiration of body parts. Then there are cases where the term fetish is used to describe a particular idealism which is held in many parts of the world: Chinese preference for small feet, Western preference for perfect breasts, etc. Then there are times when a society can absorb a fetish as part of its culture and the concept is no longer considered as a fetish but a normal desired associated with sex or sexual pleasure: women’s natural desire for lingerie, removing body hair, etc. There was a time in the late-Victorian era where slim ankles for women was considered erotic just as in modern day, in some European countries women are free to go topless whereas in the US, it may be a taboo in many states. Thus a fetish can become an intrinsic part of a culture, where it goes beyond the boundaries of fetishism. According to modern psychological and medical considerations, any sexual fetish is considered a normal variation of a person’s individual sexuality, so long as he or she is comfortable with it. For an individual, there are some medical criteria which must be met, in order to be diagnosed as ‘suffering’ from fetish. It must be noted that any unusual sexual fantasy, drive or obsession may occur to anyone over a time span of at least six months to be eligible for diagnosis. While this is still considered normal, if these fantasies and obsessions start interfering with one’s normal life style, like job, marriage, etc, then the individual may require medical treatment. According to experts, sexual fetish may require treatment, irrespective of whether the obsession is with body parts, inanimate objects including vomit, heels, corpses, toes, if the situation goes out of hand. The two possible therapy options are cognitive therapy and psychoanalysis. Both these therapy options may often be required to be supplemented by additional treatments. Cognitive therapy is based on the assumption that the fetish is the result of pre-conditioning as well as mental imprints; thus, it seeks to change the individual’s behavior with out analyzing why or how it came into existence in the first place. The therapy through psychoanalysis works on the assumption that the origin of the fetish could be due to some kind of trauma at the unconscious level. It tries to bring the unconscious to the conscious level thereby helping the individual to rationalize and stabilize his inner feelings. In contrast to cognitive therapy, psychoanalysis deals with the cause of the problem.
